SUMMARY:postponed again: vendetta retreat
DESCRIPTION:Postponed again! Stay tuned for the new date. \nBack in 2006 (!) I played in Jon Brumit‘s ensemble realizing his Vendetta Retreat score (and celebrating its release on Edgetone Records) at the Luggage Store Gallery. My memory of it was that we cleared not only the club but the block. This review confirms aspects of my recollection. \nIt’s not yet time\, no really not now\, to realize the score once more with creative and non-violent alternatives to revengeful feeling. When we convene\, expect a double duo of drums (self + Jacob Felix Heule) and guitars of Melne Murphy and Jas Stade\, with electronicists Wayne Grim and Adria Otte. \nAudiences are still invited to prepare by answering the following questions. \nDo you prefer\n\ntalking about weather\, astrology\, world events\, culture\, yourself\, or others?\nsilence\, some noise\, total noise?\nsolitude\, small\, medium\, or large crowds?\ndoing only one thing at a time or multitasking?\nsleeping or staying awake?\ncommunicating with others using paper\, computers\, phones\, other?\nfiction or nonfiction?\npeople or animals?\ngrown-ups or children?\nfriends or strangers?\nlive or recorded music?\ntv or radio commercials?\nmeeting people or isolating?\nhard rock\, jazz\, easy listening\, death metal\, instrumental\, experimental\, world\, other music?\nusing a bicycle\, car\, public transit\, walking\, bumming a ride\, or skateboarding?\nfollowing rules or breaking them?\naccepting or avoiding consequences?\nresponding immediately to an insult or waiting and responding?\nswearing or crying?\nexpressing yourself to something living or non-living?\nsmiling or laughing?\naltering\, creating\, or destroying when you’re angry?\nthrowing pianos?\nplanning or enacting revenge?\nlistening to stories or telling them?\nbeing successful or being unsuccessful at revenge?\ntalking about or getting revenge?\nsharing your plans for revenge or hoping they will go away silently?\nlooking good or feeling good?\nbeing right or being OK?\nliquid or solid food?\nWould you describe yourself as predominately alpha\, beta\, both\, or neither?

SUMMARY:Moe! Staiano Guitar Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Wielding the baton for Moe! Staiano’s large ensemble\, comprised of 10 guitarists and one composer-drummer. Since 2016 Moe! has offered me the job of sub-conductor\, and each time I negotiated for the position of semi-conductor. \nThis piece\, Away Towards the Light\, has been working on me since the first time I conducted in 2016\, again in 2017\, and in a stunning session in 2018 that coincided with the death of another artist who always called me to away towards the light: Paul Clipson. Since then\, Moe! has presented elegiac versions at Garden of Memory\, which I had to hear from afar due to a small stitch in in the inhale. The composition will always be an act of agency for me\, and a marker of loss. \nAt the rehearsal for this piece\, to be presented by the curator who commissioned it in the first place\, I received the glad gift of insight from players who have been realizing the composition since 2016 and who are realizing it for the first time. Their care for this piece\, Moe’s inclusive practice\, and the strength of the composition itself\, which calls for rigorous technique and deep communication\, catalyzes that part of me that knows what a difference music made together makes. Expect depth of feeling\, Expect we-making. \nFeaturing Moe! Staiano on drums\, John Angel\, Lorenzo Arreguin\, David James\, Brent Miller\, Melne Murphy\, Josh Pollock\, John Schott\, Jas Stade\, Robin Walsh and Bill Wolter on guitars\, and Jason Hoopes on bass. \nThe evening includes a not-to-be missed set by Normal (Fred Frith – guitar | Sudhu Tewari – home-made instruments).

DESCRIPTION:Reconvening with Edward Shocker to see just how indistinguishable the sound of glass\, shō\, and Jurassic electronics can be. Equal parts open ocean and rocky shore\, this side project of our work in the composer collective Thingamajigs Performance Group is a place for those inquiries left over from the inquiry. \nHonored to have the other inquirers Hanes / Adams on the bill. Their patient weaving of pulse and tone is more than the alter-egos of their drum- and reed-playing selves: a twinning language that fills the empty well.

SUMMARY:Vegan Butcher
DESCRIPTION:Return of the ethereal headbang Vegan Butcher\, the band that plays songs 1) only composed in January\, and 2) only containing nine notes. I should mention it is also 3) very quiet and 4) very loud\, this time in the context of the annual Outsound New Music Summit. \nI’m in the rhythm section with Wil Hendricks (bass) underpinning John Shiurba‘s liminal anthems (and electric guitar)\, that are eventually\, in good time\, wait for it\, redeemed by metatron Angela Coon singing five sentences from John’s pre-dawn somniloquies.

SUMMARY:that big drum :: that tiny pedal
DESCRIPTION:Following up on a hunch with Tim Perkis and performing a improvised duet using only two instruments: Tim’s hand-made\, tone-generating pedal and my concert bass drum. It’s an experiment in one sounding as close as it can to the other\, despite obvious differences in scale. \nExpect really tiny things from the big thing\, and really big things from the tiny thing. \nWith a set of duets from Kattt Atchley and her exquisite roster of collaborators: Susan Gervitz\, Phillip Greenlief\, Claudia La Rocco and Kenneth Atchley.

DESCRIPTION:Long toning in the Long Tone Choir\, which convenes after a remarkable episode of woodshedding to develop multitracks for a recording project by Matt Davignon. SUMMARY:Bosco / Davignon / O'Kane
DESCRIPTION:Matt Davignon is convinced he can get everyone\, or absolutely no one\, to turn out to an experimental improv gig between the Christmas and New Year holidays. I’m kind of pulling for the latter\, but really also pulling for the former because it’s a chance for people to see me to play acoustically with two electronic musicians who have the most exquisite perspectives on drums: Matt with his drum machine (and now voice) manipulations\, and Sheila Bosco\, a righteous drummer in her own right\, weighing in on keyboard-driven sound libraries and arpeggiated loops. \nThe evening opens with Toaster from San Jose. Todd Elliott is it’s sole member\, and he makes music using a variety of tools and approaches; incorporating a wide variety of electronic music styles. He’s as brave as we are.

SUMMARY:Dan Plonsey: On His Shoulders Stands No One
DESCRIPTION:Joining Dan Plonsey’s chamber ensemble on drums to perform a new work at the Outsound New Music Summit. I’ve been playing Dan’s compositions since 2002\, I think\, and if it weren’t for Outsound New Music Summit I never would have stumbled upon this clarifying sentence in Dan’s bio: \n…his compositions “arise from the drama of conflict: at least two ideas\, one sensible and one absurd\, set in motion together or against one another.” \nThat’s totally true. \nAlso on the bill: Brett Carson’s Mysterious Descent. \nAdvance tickets here.
