SUMMARY:Thingamajigs Performance Group: Pacific Exchange
DESCRIPTION:In the house band with Edward Schocker (reeds) and Dylan Bolles (flute/voice) with visiting Pacific Rim artists Phil Dadson (New Zealand) and Soo-yeon Lyuh (Korea). We’ll be exchanging ideas and creating music on a single concert stage. \nPacific Exchange is an interesting program from Thingamajigs\, inspired by the words of Lou Harrison who claimed there is a Pacific Sound that connects West Coast America with other cultures and countries along the Pacific Ocean. These concerts are intended to investigate this.

SUMMARY:Dan Plonsey: On His Shoulders Stands No One
DESCRIPTION:Joining Dan Plonsey’s chamber ensemble on drums to perform a new work at the Outsound New Music Summit. I’ve been playing Dan’s compositions since 2002\, I think\, and if it weren’t for Outsound New Music Summit I never would have stumbled upon this clarifying sentence in Dan’s bio: \n…his compositions “arise from the drama of conflict: at least two ideas\, one sensible and one absurd\, set in motion together or against one another.” \nThat’s totally true. \nAlso on the bill: Brett Carson’s Mysterious Descent. \nAdvance tickets here.

SUMMARY:Re:Sound Migration 2016
DESCRIPTION:Restaging Cordelia\, my composition for Erik Ehn‘s play for Theatre of Yugen (2011\, which casted Cordelia as a phantasmagorical Noh warrior) with four musicians and three performative filmmakers performing in an abandoned ammunition magazine as hundreds of thousands of birds pause briefly on their migration. \nI wrote the piece for a hyperlocal\, idiosyncratic Noh chorus and hayashi ensemble (Noh-bayashi 能囃子) of bass flute\, piccolo snare\, sruti box and voice. The Re:Sound edition focuses on two sources for the original composition: Peter Brook’s King Lear and that other dad\, and will be a work-in-progress showing of kono shimai tachi [ these sisters ]\, a multi-channel interpolation of two contemplations of young women: Shakespeare’s / Ehn’s Cordelia (King Lear) and Harper Lee’s Scout (To Kill A Mockingbird). \nThese separated literary characters met as while I was composing Yugen’s score\, creating a charged palette of text\, sound\, cinematic artifact and private anguish. In collaboration the Re:Sound ensemble\, Cordelia and Scout finally convene in a complex\, layered meditation. Monochromatic\, textured and distressed\, the film is built from recontextualized content and found footage. \nThe performers for Re:Sound: \n\nSteve Adams\, Bass Flute\nAlfonso Alvarez\, Performative Projection / Sruti Box\nDyemark\, Performative Projection / Sruti Box\nJohn Hanes\, Piccolo Snare\nDana Iova-Koga\, Movement\nShinichi Iova-Koga\, Movement\nKatherine McDonald\, Voice\n\nIt’s a two-day festival with a distinguished roster. I am grateful to be included. See it all.

SUMMARY:long tone choir + ritual 1 : thicket ensemble : minus two
DESCRIPTION:Returning to the Subterranean ArtHouse for another long breath\, this time taken with now-local composer Rae Diamond‘s Long Tone Choir. \nThis is also a reprise of RITUAL 1: thicket ensemble : minus one with Mateo Lugo. We convened with Katherine McDonald and Tim Kim for the first time in early 2015 to accompany the movement performance of Mari Osanai with Dana Iova-Koga and Shinichi Iova-Koga (inkBoat). Combining voice and acoustic strings with processed water and found objects in an act of empathic listening\, we continued the exploration with inkBoat’s 95 RITUALS (for Anna Halprin): developing and performing a monumental set of works informed by Anna through July of this year. \n“Ritual is another word that needs a new definition… Ritual\, as I use the term\, refers to an artistic process by which people gather and unify themselves in order to confront the challenges of their existence.” (Anna Halprin) \n

SUMMARY:Silence on the Sevens
DESCRIPTION:After playing on the nines (2013) and listening on the eights (2014)\, a year of silence on the sevens commenced in November 2014: an experiment in reception without expression. \nAs the hours toll seven on the seventh of each month\, I’ll be silent for multiples of seven units of time: starting with seconds\, moving to minutes\, ending with hours. \nContinuity of the practice in seclusion is encouraged.

SUMMARY:indiGoGo Go. Go to. Go to Korea.
DESCRIPTION:I have a rare opportunity to be in the first ensemble from the United States invited to perform at Seoul International Dance Festival\, the UNESCO-hosted performing arts festival in Seoul\, Korea. inkBoat’s Line Between Minus Three Plus Three will be re-invisioned for the stage. In this iteration I am stoked to be renewing my artistic collaboration with Noh actor Jubilith Moore\, and deepening my artistic collaboration with singer-sound artist Katherine McDonald. \nTo say I’m reticent to arm-twist you into a crowdfunding campaign is putting it mildly. This time\, however\, I am thinking everyone will share my enthusiasm for getting a short lead time invitation to something rather crazily fantastic\, and needing to scrape some airfare together real quick. \nPlease help out if you can. Any amount makes a difference. \nAnd while I have you: you make a difference. Thanks.

SUMMARY:Other People's Music
DESCRIPTION:I’m taking September off from performance to propel the creativity of others: \n\nLisa Mezzacappa’s Glorious Ravage\, the panoramic free jazz song cycle that features a large ensemble of stellar improvisers performing new music in dialogue with films created by Bay Area moving image artists Janis Crystal Lipzin\, Kathleen Quillian\, Alfonso Alvarez and Konrad Steiner. The project is inspired by the adventures and writings of lady explorers of the 19th century who trekked to the wildest parts of the earth\, to escape\, to discover\, and to lose themselves.Follow this process and mark your calendars for performances at the end of September (Southern California) and the Bay Area premiere at Brava October 1st and 2nd.\n\nAnd revisit prior work with beloved collaborators: \n\ninkBoat’s Line Between\, the 2009-2011 exploration of moments between sleep and wakefulness culminated in an award-winning performance at ODC. The show tours to Seoul\, Korea in October with the addition of Noh actor Jubilith Moore and singer-sound artist Katherine McDonald.\n\n
