SUMMARY:redline redefined: brooklyn clinton by bike
DESCRIPTION:Commissioned by Thingamajigs Redline Redefined in 2021\, I created graphic scores and soundscapes from field recordings and research of the 1937 Holc maps of the historic Brooklyn and Clinton townships that intersect nearly on top of my studio. Now it’s time to hop on your bike to explore the five locations with me. \nThis flat route is slow-paced\, family friendly\, with frequent stops for a bit of history and plant identification\, some deep listening\, and conversation about how the red line has always been\, and continues to be redefined by people\, cultures\, and the natural world itself. \nThe round trip starts at 11am from the Fruitvale BART taxi stand and will last 60-90 minutes. Bring your bike\, helmet\, water\, and smart phone loaded with the Redline Redefined map. \nHere’s my artist statement for additional context. Top of mind: I’m grateful to have joined this cohort of distinguished artists to investigate the redlines that continue to exclude East Bay people from prosperity and sustainability. A luta continua.

SUMMARY:'round midnight
DESCRIPTION:Joining a large ensemble to realize John Schott’s durational performance of Thelonius Monk’s ‘Round Midnight over an eight hour session. This is music as 1) music\, 2) performance art and 3) spiritual opportunity where quarter note = 2-1/2 minutes. \nThe performance intentionally takes place on Shavuot\, when Jews are encouraged to stay up all night studying the holy texts together. Check out the one hour reduction from last year\, though my experience of it was a bit different: sitting in John’s garage for hours as he played\, studying\, as instructed\, the sound and being eternally surprised by the neighborhood birds joining in with their dawn chorus. A couple of them got quite close\, standing in the doorway to see what they were harmonizing with. \n\nMark Clifford\, vibraphone\nAurora Josephson and Cecilia Englehart on vocals\nScott Larson\, trombone\nNikita Manin and Cory Wright on woodwinds\nLisa Mezzacappa and Safa Shokrai on bass\nKanoko Nishi-Smith\, Koto\nCrystal Pascucci\, cello\nMe\, Jason Levis and John Hanes\, drums and percussion.\n\nYes\, of course\, attend in person with mask and vax\, or find your virtual level.

SUMMARY:mysteries of ub no. 77
DESCRIPTION:BC30\, the born-of-necessity raised-due-to-sheer-delight tablecore trio of me\, Andy Cowitt and Michael Wertz convened with parent entity Big City Orchestra back in March to collage the sounds found outside our windows. My window? The boiling sea of 880 South which\, I discovered\, can be EQ’d into a warm mantra. Helpful. \nThat work made its way into the Mysteries of UB program screening on Bay Area public access cable television PeraltaTV. This first Friday monthly broadcast is a glorious immersion into experimential sound and vision that can take you back to the simpler days of extraordinary reality. \nWatch live on Comcast cable Channel 27 (Alameda and Berkeley)\, Channel 28 (Oakland\, Emeryville and Piedmont) and AT&T Uverse Channel 99. If you used the pandemic to inspire you to kill your television\, tune in on the Mysteries of UB Vimeo channel.
