SUMMARY:Sonic Body Series #10
DESCRIPTION:Christine Bonansea returns to convene dancers and musicians in an improvisation\, the tenth since 2013. I remember watching this unfold at the (old) Berkeley Art Museum and feeling its dead serious recklessness\, its sharp use of space and silence\, and the intensity of performance conversation between the movement and sound artists. Dancers make me a better musician. \nI’ll be performing with Christine\, Rosemary Hannon and Marina Fukushima (movement) and Tom Djll\, Jacob Felix Heule and Tim Perkis (music). SUMMARY:Moe! Staiano Guitar Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Wielding the baton for Moe! Staiano’s large ensemble\, comprised of nine guitarists and one composer-drummer. He initially offered me the job of sub-conductor\, but I negotiated for the position of semi-conductor. \nFeaturing Karl Alfonso Evangelista\, Jay Korber\, Jacob McCann\, Matt Montgomery\, Melne Murphy\, Damon Waitkus\, Robin Hiroko Walsh\, Drew Wheeler\, and Bill Wolter on guitars and Vicky Grossi on bass.

SUMMARY:Library Music
DESCRIPTION:A site-specific sound installation by the newly-minted BC30\, the tablecore trio initially charged with fronting for Big City Orchestra‘s in-studio radio interview\, and now finding it can’t stop articulating themes. I’m on Jurassic electronics with Andrew Cowitt and Michael Wertz. \nThe installation is performed by six of the Library’s Digital Talking Book Players\, and draws its sonic vocabulary from field recordings in the Library itself. The central melody of Library Music was created by a braille printer\, which BC3.0 realizes with piano\, sample\, audio collage and silence. \nWhen you visit the Library expecting to hear music and you hear (instead) silence\, just wait in the stacks. BC3o will show up. If you need to hear more of it\, continuously\, point your Internet radio here. If you want to add it to your SoundCloud playlist\, point your browser here.

SUMMARY:Bosco / Davignon / O'Kane
DESCRIPTION:Matt Davignon is convinced he can get everyone\, or absolutely no one\, to turn out to an experimental improv gig between the Christmas and New Year holidays. I’m kind of pulling for the latter\, but really also pulling for the former because it’s a chance for people to see me to play acoustically with two electronic musicians who have the most exquisite perspectives on drums: Matt with his drum machine (and now voice) manipulations\, and Sheila Bosco\, a righteous drummer in her own right\, weighing in on keyboard-driven sound libraries and arpeggiated loops. \nThe evening opens with Toaster from San Jose. Todd Elliott is it’s sole member\, and he makes music using a variety of tools and approaches; incorporating a wide variety of electronic music styles. He’s as brave as we are.

SUMMARY:Thingamajigs Performance Group
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Cahill is convening a ton of us to create a four-hour musical community gathering in honor of those we’ve lost this year\, including the Ghost Ship fire victims and beloved composer Pauline Oliveros. I’ll be there with Thingamajigs Performance Group making grief\, and joy\, sonic.

SUMMARY:Vegan Butcher
DESCRIPTION:The CD release party for the ethereal headbang of Vegan Butcher\, the band that plays songs 1) only composed in January\, and 2) only containing nine notes. I should mention it is also 3) very quiet and 4) very loud. \nI’m in the rhythm section with Wil Hendricks (bass) underpinning John Shiurba‘s liminal anthems (and electric guitar)\, that are eventually\, in good time\, wait for it\, redeemed by metatron Val Esway singing five sentences from John’s pre-dawn somniloquies. \nThe inimitable Ultralash opens. Expect an extraordinary close from Moe! Staiano’s Surplus 1980.

SUMMARY:OrcheSperry performs INDEX
DESCRIPTION:Phillip Greenlief assembles the OrcheSperry to premiere his new work INDEX to close the current address of Berkeley Arts (Festival)\, the nomadic venue that specializes in appropriating vacant store fronts. I’m hoping it moves back to one of the locations it used to occupy\, now that the displacing occupiers have long since run out of capital and commitment. Art never goes away. \nI’m joining the distinguished percussion section on concert bass drum alongside Tim DeCillis (vibraphone)\, Jordan Glenn (drums)\, Ava Lynch (small instruments)\, Julie Moon (piano) and Karen Stackpole (gongs). Check out the full artist roster here.

SUMMARY:Counting
DESCRIPTION:A durational duo performance with visual artist Bodil Fox to perform Counting\, an artwork in memory of the 40\,290 women who died of breast cancer in the United States in 2015. Bodil started the work this year celebrating each woman’s life with beautiful warm-colored sewing threads slowly wound around a piece of wood\, one full turn for one woman. We expect to make 20\,000 turns during this 8-hour performance\, and we realize we might not. \nThe artwork will be finished when 40\,290 turns have been completed.\nThis performance is part of Artists’ Television Access’ Almost Public/Semi-Exposed III\, a program dedicated to durational performance art taking place 24 hours a day in the storefront window of ATA’s micro-cinema.

SUMMARY:New Zombies
DESCRIPTION:Playing percussion in New Zombies\, the large ensemble dedicated to putting the avant garde compositions of Dan Plonsey into afrobeat arrangements\, this time in the middle of the East Bay Mini Maker Faire\, which gives me some kind of pause\, since the thing we make is so fundamental\, yet\, wouldn’t you agree\, essentially ethereal? \nOur chance to make something of ourselves. \nAdvance tickets now available.
