SUMMARY:gretchen jude: divide
DESCRIPTION:Joining John Bischoff\, Kevin Corcoran\, and Shanna Shordahl to realize Gretchen Jude’s Divide\, a performance score exploring peaks of the Great Divide\, the Americas’ primary watershed comprised of topographical ridges separating eastward and westward flows. \nGretchen writes \nAt an elevation of 6720 feet\, Western Montana’s Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge (nestled high in the Centennial Valley) is a rare and striking place. Moose\, grizzlies\, and angus roam free. Peregrine falcons and red-tailed hawks circle to eye me\, strange bipedal interloper. At this height\, divisive human contentions seem to flatten out\, worn away by brutal winters and raucous thaws. \nDivide is comprised of three hand-drawn graphic scores that trace silhouettes of mountains that dominated Gretchen’s stay at the Taft-Nicholson Environmental Humanities Center (Lakeview\, Montana). Field recordings illustrate the failings of human technology at the fringes of civilization. Instructions to my friends down in the city\, at sea level\, are an invitation to sound out our differences. To brave the divide. \nExpect the concert bass drum and a set of sound and image from Anna Friz: Salar: Adaptation.

SUMMARY:mit Moth
DESCRIPTION:Garden of Memory\, that venerable\, chat-tastic\, annual perambulation through Oakland’s Julia Morgan-designed Columbarium\, has invited Edward Schocker to perform\, and he\, in turn\, hypnotized me into joining him and Rae Diamond in an inceptive trio now known (in my mind) as mit Moth\, the meta side project cascading from mit Darm\, the moth stays\, and Thingamajigs Performance Group. \nExpect Edward on triggering glass\, p’iri and shō\, Rae on voice and found object\, me on contact mics and Jurassic pedals using the moment durationally to listen and elide. I have no doubt it’s already playing.

SUMMARY:Moe! Staiano Guitar Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Wielding the baton for Moe! Staiano’s large ensemble\, comprised of 10 guitarists and one composer-drummer. Since 2016 Moe! has offered me the job of sub-conductor\, and each time I negotiated for the position of semi-conductor. \nThis piece\, Away Towards the Light\, has been working on me since the first time I conducted in 2016\, again in 2017\, and in a stunning session in 2018 that coincided with the death of another artist who always called me to away towards the light: Paul Clipson. Since then\, Moe! has presented elegiac versions at Garden of Memory\, which I had to hear from afar due to a small stitch in in the inhale. The composition will always be an act of agency for me\, and a marker of loss. \nAt the rehearsal for this piece\, to be presented by the curator who commissioned it in the first place\, I received the glad gift of insight from players who have been realizing the composition since 2016 and who are realizing it for the first time. Their care for this piece\, Moe’s inclusive practice\, and the strength of the composition itself\, which calls for rigorous technique and deep communication\, catalyzes that part of me that knows what a difference music made together makes. Expect depth of feeling\, Expect we-making. \nFeaturing Moe! Staiano on drums\, John Angel\, Lorenzo Arreguin\, David James\, Brent Miller\, Melne Murphy\, Josh Pollock\, John Schott\, Jas Stade\, Robin Walsh and Bill Wolter on guitars\, and Jason Hoopes on bass. \nThe evening includes a not-to-be missed set by Normal (Fred Frith – guitar | Sudhu Tewari – home-made instruments).

SUMMARY:Kin Salt Seance
DESCRIPTION:We were told of the oldest pepper tree in Vallejo\, to listen and to drink deep. The floorpan and the boardroom are all laid out connected in spirit and sight and signal. Adjacent shapes for familiar relations. More shapes than we can imagine color our food everyday and pull on our shirts. Have you seen the lion? \n\n\nUpstairs in 1860 an intercession\, a table\, a figure of outgoing lines and a broken panorama as we join hands\, all our twists of fingers bound up inside one another. Notice your chest\, swelling up in call and response\, a hinged barn door and the rapping of diminishing oxygen in here. The electric ghosts and the binding problem.  The Winslow House is our instrument in 2024. Convening subjects of our attentions are drawn from the cloudy vapors and the mycelial outgrowths and rewoven into complexes of gating\, to keep the chickens together. Visiting personalities\, both human and not\, both allies and antagonists are arrayed like divinatory cards\, in a power law distribution.  It may be in the candle\, It may be in the water\, you may douse it out; there may be specious conclusions that need arbitration or brigandage. A willingness to flow and be game and to look squarely at the externalities and catastrophic risks. \n\nCome back to the pepper tree and the house. Use this instrument to attenuate what you perform\, refloridate your gut\, the soil microbes and the phytoplankton whom convene\, with mitochondrial strengths and codes. Notice your chest rise and fall and the lattice of weather pass over. Use this feedback to develop the ear stage. Use this instrument to avert and send away the counterfeits and asymmetries\, perverse incentives that see us not here\, absent skittering in a multipolar trap. Spin the pointers and tone along\, you’ve only fear to lose. The river feeds the roads\, and the bridges of Mare Island will be drawn for you.\n\n  \nInterrelationships \nFeedback networks \nRitual and taboo \nKinship \nThe individual \nArbitration \nMediation \nNegotiation (exchange) \nMutual adaptation \nAlliance \nCo-operation \nIntegration \nTransformation \nUnseen beings \nGhost dialectics \nLevitation \nAn occupation of Winslow House with John Davis\, Keith Evans\, Sean Horchy\, Kathleen Quillian\, Linda Scobie and self using the following instructions as launch: \n\nSeek an energy center\nFind the mind’s eye\nSense\, to the fullest extent possible\, time\, space\, energy\, light and existence\nDevelop a language system-form that approximates what you see/feel/hear/perceive\nFind a medium (mediums) for translating/transcribing that language\nSeek other individuals or audiences for communication and transmission\nRitualize the language-responses and transmissions therein to foster connections and aid to the ongoing vibrational registry\nServe yourself and others as a constructive divining rod for the perpetual vibrational waves that convene within and without

SUMMARY:postponed: vendetta retreat
DESCRIPTION:Postponed! Stay tuned for a rescheduled performance date. \nBack in 2006 (!) I played in Jon Brumit‘s ensemble realizing his Vendetta Retreat score (and celebrating its release on Edgetone Records) at the Luggage Store Gallery. SUMMARY:do-over series: treasure mouth
DESCRIPTION:Collaborating with Lisa Mezzacappa (bass)\, Jordan Glenn (drums)\, Kathleen Quillian\, Gilbert Guerrero\, and Ellie Vanderlip (performative 16mm projection) to bring Matthew Sperry’s Treasure Mouth score to the monthly Do Over series at Shapeshifters Cinema. \nOnce described as “hackable karoake with live visuals and improvised text” this score was pulled from the journals of the late Matthew Sperry. He envisioned an ensemble of singers and musicians attempting to keep up with someone writing extemporaneously on an overhead projector. We’ve envisioned it a couple times\, and learned that serving latkes with applesauce and sour cream at the gig is very important. Expect those. \nJohn Shiurba conducts this edition\, with \n\nVal Esway\, vocals\nKarl Evangelista\, guitar\nDavid James\, guitar and vocal\nDan Plonsey\, reeds\nGino Robair\, electronics\nMaw Shein Win\, extemporaneous writer\nCory Wright\, reeds\n(and perhaps two more to be announced)

When we convene\, expect a double duo of drums (self + Jacob Felix Heule) and guitars of Melne Murphy and Jas Stade\, with electronicists Wayne Grim and Adria Otte. \nAudiences are still invited to prepare by answering the following questions. \nDo you prefer\n\ntalking about weather\, astrology\, world events\, culture\, yourself\, or others?\nsilence\, some noise\, total noise?\nsolitude\, small\, medium\, or large crowds?\ndoing only one thing at a time or multitasking?\nsleeping or staying awake?\ncommunicating with others using paper\, computers\, phones\, other?\nfiction or nonfiction?\npeople or animals?\ngrown-ups or children?\nfriends or strangers?\nlive or recorded music?\ntv or radio commercials?\nmeeting people or isolating?\nhard rock\, jazz\, easy listening\, death metal\, instrumental\, experimental\, world\, other music?\nusing a bicycle\, car\, public transit\, walking\, bumming a ride\, or skateboarding?\nfollowing rules or breaking them?\naccepting or avoiding consequences?\nresponding immediately to an insult or waiting and responding?\nswearing or crying?\nexpressing yourself to something living or non-living?\nsmiling or laughing?\naltering\, creating\, or destroying when you’re angry?\nthrowing pianos?\nplanning or enacting revenge?\nlistening to stories or telling them?\nbeing successful or being unsuccessful at revenge?\ntalking about or getting revenge?\nsharing your plans for revenge or hoping they will go away silently?\nlooking good or feeling good?\nbeing right or being OK?\nliquid or solid food?\nWould you describe yourself as predominately alpha\, beta\, both\, or neither?

SUMMARY:thingamajigs performance group
DESCRIPTION:Thingamajigs Performance Group convenes to contemplate group member Keith Evans‘s participation in the exhibition Loss and Gain: Text Isle also featuring work by \n\nStella Zhang\nRobin Dintiman\nSha Sha Higby\nChelsea Stewart\n\n\nAnd additional performances by \n\nZachary James Watkins\nRoco Cordova\n\nKeith and Rae write \n\nTurtle island. Text isle. We are marking our emotion\, arked on the coast of the ring of fire. Swollen with a haunting at a vista point in the mineral epoch of the Anthropocene\, we take off our shoes and cobble an active studio: everyday objects\, food\, tea\, the unheard hum of the ever-expanding universe\, and our attachments. All unmake-remake their places. In the swirl of landscape transformations\, catastrophic Fires-Floods-Earthquakes-Tsunamis\, how do we create beyond the apocalyptic?\n\nReconstruction-destruction of the geologic environment pushes on ancient frames\, describes our interdependence\, co-senses and inscribes our implications. If we look\, listen\, drink\, and breathe in the loss of the known\, what do we exhale? Anguish? Wonder? Ecstasy?\n\n\nThe presence of grief is woven in experience\, spooled by polarities. Here\, these artists are compelled to work in this dualism to transform emotions that bind into a boundless sky of empathy; into affirming arrays of address and inquiry. What can we do when the not-knowing of mystery looms? Spin and weave. \n\n\nIn poetic irony\, attempts along lines of different experiences create convergences while attempts along lines of similar experiences create divergences. The weave of these moments cleave off shadows of impressions—in our social lives\, family histories\, lost selves\, and friends grown away; stories of wounds and marks that stretch our bodies to the limits of muscle and movement; ovulation and the tissue of birth processes. \nWhat might we\, as participants\, drop? What might we yet hold? And what holds us? \n\n\nExpect Rae Diamond on voice\, gesture\, and objects\, Edward Schocker on glass and reeds\, and me and Keith on electronics and performative projection.
